Hello

Angharad Davies

My name is Angharad - Haz for short - and I’ve worked in the Australian wine industry since 2017 when I quit my London corporate job in pursuit of something more interesting. My plan was to take Aussie wine stories to China, but covid and the 200% tariffs put an end to that dream.  So I met a farmer and moved to the middle of nowhere in rural Victoria.  A traveler at heart, I believe in the value of experience and since moving to the countryside, the benefit of fresh country air.  With China off the cards and wine drinking in decline, I decided now is as good a time as any to put real Australian wine stories on the map, not for China, but for you guys, here, at home.  These stories unfold in our own backyard and if you like wine, or just a good yarn, they’re worth knowing about.

Speakeasy Cellar Doors exists to create change, not profit.  It’s a side-hustle, a passion project, a creative outlet.  It’s founded on connection, as at the heart of it we’re just that; a community of wine lovers and winemakers, cutting through the crap with real conversations and rustic encounters.

Our mission is threefold:

ONE

To get you off the beaten track.  From Bali to Barcelona, everybody seems to be going to the same places these days.  We encourage you to look the other way and go against the grain.  Get out into the countryside and see something different, meet somebody new and better yet, try some great wines whilst you’re at it.

TWO

Amplify the stories of small, artisanal wine producers. Remember, big does not always mean better. You don’t need a cellar door to make great wine, and our producers prove this in spades.  They’re great people, making quality wine, offering you an interesting time right at the source of it; in the vineyard amongst the vines.

THREE

Make your money matter.  As a society we’re drinking less, but - when we do choose to dabble - we’re spending more.  Make your money matter by supporting producers you not only love, but you know in person.  Buying directly from the winemaker is the best way to support the winemaker, rural communities and the Australian wine industry which should make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

If you’ve made it this far, there’s nothing more for me to say welcome to the community!  Please get in touch if you have any questions, suggestions, recommendations or you just want to talk about great people and great wine.
